Dallas Fort Worth launches debut of American Airlines mobile app for TSA PreCheck users

Mobile app development in Dallas is making great strides. Travel verification technology using facial recognition has been developed due to a collaboration between the Transportation Security Agency (TSA), American Airlines, Airside, and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). TSA PreCheck members can now use facial recognition for an easy-to-use travel verification process. Travelers can build their secure mobile ID by utilizing their TSA PreCheck membership, AAdvantage number, and a driver's license or U.S. passport.

In order to use the Airside Digital Identity App, travelers with TSA PreCheck must first download it to an iOS or Android device, snap a photo of their face, scan their ID (driver's license or passport), and enter their American Airlines AAdvantage number. After completing these steps, the app uses mobile ID technology powered by Thales to verify the traveler's information by comparing it to the databases of each state's department of motor vehicles records or the integrated NFC chip in the passport. The traveler's mobile ID will then be safely stored by the app on their mobile device until they decide when and where to utilize it.

Travelers only need to scan a QR code with their phone to give the TSA permission to use their American Airlines Mobile-ID. After giving their mobile ID, travelers at the TSA PreCheck checkpoint glance into a camera. The TSA's computer system will compare the traveler's encrypted image to their American Airlines Mobile-ID. Usually, the procedure at the airport lasts less than five seconds. When a traveler's digital ID has been validated, the TSA deletes the encrypted version from its checkpoint readers, but they can still access it on their device until they are ready to use it at another waypoint, such as an airport lounge.

“We’re thankful for our stakeholders’ collaboration and support in driving the industry forward to offer innovative security checkpoint solutions to help customers safely and securely travel,” said Kriste Jordan-Smith, Federal Security Director, DFW Airport, for TSA. “We’ll continue to take an agile approach to develop a stress-free and secure traveling experience for TSA PreCheck passengers, and look forward to expanding this technology in the future.”

American will introduce comparable technology in the future for extra kiosks, bag checks, and domestic boarding gates. At a number of international boarding gates, American customers can already use facial matching technology offered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection to confirm their identities.
